Organic Anyone?
Happy Thursday Afternoon all you BuddySlim Buddys!!! Wow, feeling on top of the world this afternoon. All of this eating healthy and exercising is finally paying off!!! I managed to fit into a pair of jeans I haven’t been able to wear in months. I wasn’t able to breathe, but who cares!!!!!!!!! LOL!!! I wore them all day…and the next time I wear them they will be comfortable….that is my mission in life right now
I’m doing some research on organic foods. I know several of my buddys focus on all healthy “whole foods”, “organic” foods and as I watched Montal Williams today he did a show on “Living Well” The segment today focused on food.
One speaker came on and talked about organic food. The program I am currently on for my weight issues concentrates on organics as well.
I was just wondering if anyone had some input concerning organic foods,….maybe opinions on the taste? is it that different? Price? seems to be higher. Do you feel better eating organic foods? Is it worth the extra cost?
I’ve bought a few organic items and really don’t see a difference in taste….so any input would be appreciated!!!
Hope everyone is having a great day…and I was very happy to see that Shanna blogged!!! I’ll be watching everyday Buttercup!!!

Give ourselves humbly to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
James 4:7

I buy as much organic as I can because I truly believe that it is FAR healthier than the other stuff. As far as taste, I don’t really see any difference, and I wish the cost were more reasonable but I figure I’m worth it, you only have one shot at life and you need to do all you can to build your temple strong and healthy.
I try to buy locally grown organic but it’s hard to find here, I believe it would indeed be tastier simply because it would be fresher.
If you eat meat, I highly recommend buying the stuff that is at least produced without hormones, antibiotics and additives. I also recommend kosher meat if you have access to it. If you’ve ever read how animals (non-kosher)are slaughtered it will almost make you give up eating the stuff. It’s horrible, sometimes they are skinned alive because the electrocution didn’t kill them. All the stress hormones they make over the slaughter process while they are still alive are present in their meat and then we ingest them into our own bodies. And then we wonder why we are stressed out and unhealthy when we lead the lives we do and eat the things we do! The reason meat is kosher is that the animal must die instantly and the blood is completely drained from the animal and none of the meat that could be contaminated with body waste can be used. It’s more humane and more apt to be free of bacteria and blood born problems!
I live in Nashville most of the week and I use to shop at Wild Oats but they sold out to Whole Foods, which I was already familiar with from working in CA often. I LOVE that store but they joke that if you spent half your paycheck at Wild Oats, you will now spend your whole paycheck at Whole Foods! It’s not far from the truth! But there stuff is soooo good!
I used to work in Horticulture and did a work study in college at a huge greenhouse…they weren’t growing food…but they didn’t think twice about using pesicides. And the people using it, well, they were not very educated. One of the chemicals they would use (which had been banned already due to the danger) could be fatal to humans…and they would just use it any ol’ time. I just didn’t seem to be as regulated as you would think it should be.
I tell you all that to say…I think anytime you can have something natural…then it is better for your body and the environment! You never know what has really been done with the pesticides that have been put on your food.
I love Trader Joes…they have good organic stuff and it is reasonable!
Trader Joe’s is the way to go. Cheap, good quality, organic mostly.
Check the labels Jane and be prepared to spend way more money on some very familiar foods… but it’s worth it.
I tend to eat mostly organic food as most people in my family will joke about. I even smoked organic cigarettes - isn’t that a hoot. I used to work with farmworkers and i really do believe all the chemicals just aren’t good for us. However, i am also a big fan of fresh, local, and seasonal food and i think that’s where you get the better taste. I do buy certain things organic like milk products and fruits or veggies where you eat the skin. There are ideas about if you have limited money what should you buy - i’ve seen a few different lists and usually it’s strawberries, peppers (so expensive tho), skin fruits like apples, and lettuces. As far as where to shop, I don’t like TJs produce as much b/c it’s so packaged, i prefer Whole Foods but everything ther eis very expensive. If you’re on a budget, i would opt for organinc or cage free, friendly animal products, eggs, dairy and try a few fresh fruits and veggies. Don’t worry so much about the processed food if you are tight for money. Look into supporting local agriculture as well - small farms tend to use less pesticides and farmers markets and CSAs(community supported agriculture) are showing up every where.
YOU ARE DOING AMAZING! So good to hear you are having a GREAT day like me! I wish organic wasn’t more expensive, I guess all the good things in life aren’t easy and aren’t cheap but well worth it.
Awww right back!! I would so love to do that, too!

Congrats on the jeans!
Haven’t been able to be on much, and I feel out of touch with you! Thanks so much for the hug and CONGRATS, WOOHOOO, and YIPEEEEE on the jeans!
Okay, while I believe that organic food is better for you, and that the pesticides are bad for you. I am WAY to cheap to spend that kind of money for one thing. For TWO I just read a scientific study that proved if you wash your veggies with a veggie brush, then you don’t have to worry about the pesitcides. It’s all washed once upon picking, plus again when it’s sitting in the produce isle under the misters. If you then wash them a third time at home with a veggie brush and 1/2 vinegar 1/2 water. The study did tests on both organic and regular veggies and it said if you wash them with the brush they are of the same quality as organic.
I do agree with buying Kosher meat! We do, and we buy direct from farmers too for our meats, it’s cheaper to get kosher that way.
Congrats on the jeans I love that feeling!
Hmmm…organic food is pricier and better so to speak, BUT buyer beware because the FDA standards for what can be labeled “organic” is very lenient, so you may be paying much more for something that is not necessarily better. Do your research–that’s the best piece of advice I can give you. I am not there yet….I’m still trying to get this healthy eating thing down (with SB). I hope to one day become a vegetarian and later on in life, a vegetarian who eats organic. Anyhow that’s waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay into the future, for now, let me get this SB thing down to a science!
P.S. Congrats on the jeans!! No wonder you’re on cloud 9!
