Quick Question please

For anybody just reading blogs if you have a minute I have a quick question.

If you went shopping, paid your bill and realized as you were walking out the door the cashier had given you more change then you were supposed to get.

What would you do?  Would you give it back?

Or would you say to yourself “the store makes so much money off of me anyways” and keep the extra money?

Just curious how people would react and what there thoughts are on this.  I’ll follow up on this….hoping to get a little response anyways.  How does our world stand on honesty and morals today?  This should be interesting!

Thank you in advance to anyone that might take a minute to respond.

I give it back, but the cashier is sometimes a little defensive and acts as though I am insulting her by noticing she has made a mistake. Hey, we all make mistakes. Marge

Honestly… It would depend on how much it is and how she treated me. If she was a total biznatch I wouldn’t but if she was really nice I would.. Sorry if someone doesn’t like my answer but it’s the truth! Sometimes it’s not your fault they can’t count..

Give it back. As a former cashier, your job depends on your accuracy and mistakes happen. You’d want someone to give you a break if you goofed, wouldn’t you?

Definitely give it back. Karma comes back around, and we would all want the money given back to us if we were the ones who had made the mistake.

    Give it back…no question!

Give it back, the cashiers have to count out at the end of their shifts and if they come up short they are out of a job and possibly into handcuffs.

Give it back, I worked as a cashier and if it was even a few cents short the cashier would be accountable.

    I’d always return it.

Give it back 99% of the time. The one exception for me would be if the cashier had been doing something silly such as talking on the cell phone or flirting with the cashier over in the next aisle (I have seen both of these happen as I was making a purchase!) that would have caused him/her to be distracted…then I think the extra $ fair game and they deserve to be held accountable!

Give it back. This just happened to me the other day at work - I had gone down for a banana and some coffee for breakfast and the cashier gave me too much back. I walked off and was counting my change. I waited until there was no one in her line and went back. She thanked me profusely and was teary-eyed. So, it does matter… no matter what - you give it back.

Hmm…good question. YOu know they did a 20/20 on this? Myabe it was dateline? Anyway, they put in an actress as a fake cashier and purposely gave everyone too much change (extra $5, $10, or $20). They followed people with hidden cameras to see how many people gave it back. The majority of them kept it.
I appreicate what people are saying about working as a cashier and having your drawer off and getting ‘in trouble’. As an ex-retail manager this is very true. For me, I’m usually just too busy to count my change when I leave a store. Juggling my purchase, the baby and my purse it’s just too much. I would probably never notice.
If I did I like to think I’d give it back. Guess you never really know until you’re in the situation.
